Tasting Valrhona, The “Best Chocolate in the World”

Having discovered quite by chance that Valrhona, considered by many to be the best chocolate in the world (well, apart from Dairy Milk, obviously), has its headquarters in Tain l’Hermitage the twin town of Tournon-sur-Rhone, we HAD to visit before we headed south this morning….. so we did.


Tee hee – you could taste ALL the many, many flavours of Valrhona chocolate, from the darkest dark chocolate to milky milk chocoate and two kinds of white chocolate.  As you went in the door there were dispensers of small ellipse-shaped chocolate lozenges of the different flavours, and you could just help yourself…. and as you helped yourself, more dropped down into the dispenser from above, oh my goodness, the Oompa Loompas were hard at work this morning.

Tim wimped out after a mere 5 or 6 handfuls of chocolate, on the flimsy grounds that we had only just had breakfast.  I am made of sterner stuff, as is Julia, and we managed to make quite a professional job of tasting the different flavours in order to make an educated judgement of their work.  It is quite expensive chocolate – one bar costs about 8 or 9 euros, but it is really very good.  I bought a small memento, and we came away happy that we had found the place.  Mmmmmmm.
